Sustainability
Sustainability is an umbrella term encompassing discussions and activities in all manners of issues, policies, technologies, strategies related to keeping the environment clean and preserving Earth’s limited resources. Civilization is expanding at breakneck speeds. Humans are building, manufacturing, transporting more than ever thought possible. This is putting a strain on Earth’s assets. There is only one Earth, and whatever humans are dependent on its resources. Given the pace that civilization is expanding, the world may run out of resources. This is where sustainability comes into play. By reducing waste and encouraging environmental practices, sustainability is all about taking care of our planet.
Sustainability in the Paper Industry
29,350 Metric Tons of paper were produced in Bangladesh in November 2021 increasing by 30 Metrics Tons from the month before. This demand will only be increasing with rapid economic growth. Bangladesh is attracting foreign investment as a new and coming business hub. The Demand for paper will follow this trend. This will inevitably lead to large volumes of waste and discarded paper.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 26% of solid municipal waste in landfill sites is made of discarded paper and paperboard. With an increase in paper production the amount of generated waste will also increase. The most effective way of mitigating this threat is recycling paper. Recycling paper may cause 35% less water pollution and 74% less air pollution than making new paper. Is recycling paper bad for the environment? – BBC Science Focus Magazine Base Papers Limited is well aware of these issues and is working from the very beginning to tackle the problem. Base Papers Limited produces all products from recycled paper. Recycling paper greatly reduces the negative impact on the environment. NatGeo-LCA-Report-2013.pdf (greenamerica.org)
It is clear that sustainability centric initiatives are absolutely necessary for the paper industry. Base Papers Limited is working to realize that vision, so we can all dream for a better tomorrow.
